The Other Side of the Golden Rule…

The issues associated with homelessness are numerous and complex, even as the concern and desire to help of many is genuine. My involvement with the ministry of the Open Door Mission has made me realize that often, with the best of intentions, I can do things that actually reinforce the kind of thinking that leads to homelessness. The old adage is that in the life of every addict, there is at least one person who enables them to remain in their addiction. Often you find that there is an entire ‘support network’ (how’s that for a misnomer?), usually the person’s family that enables the person to continue in their destructive lifestyle. Obviously, I have no desire to be a part of this system, which brings me to what I have come to call, “the other side of the golden rule.”

I have learned a painful lesson: with my clients: the thing I tend to feel to be the loving thing to do is often the worst thing I can do. Many of the folks I work with see life very differently than I do, so much so that it sometimes feels like we aren’t even living on the same planet. I automatically assume that if I appreciate an act of kindness or generosity, they will to. This is a false assumption.

It is a painful realization that treating someone the way I would want to be treated can actually have tragic, sometimes even disastrous consequences. My work forces me to recognize that kindness, generosity and empathy, normally wonderful qualities, can be the exact opposite of what my clients need most from me. Frankly, this has been a difficult reality to grasp and something even harder to implement. After almost two years, I am just now beginning to appreciate the importance of this approach.

You see, it goes against everything I have been taught. It is a contradiction to the way I am accustomed to working with the vast majority of the people I meet! I was never told that sometimes ‘ministry’ can appear to be heartless and unsympathetic. In all honesty, I think this might be one of the greatest hurdles I face in seeking to have an effective ministry here at the Open Door Mission

In summary, what I really need is discernment, finding the balance in Spirit-led ministry that only the grace of God can provide.

By the way, I am still a believer in the Golden Rule and I hope you are, too. Let’s be extra gracious to one another the next time we meet.

A Bump in the Road of Life

God demonstrated to me again today how he is able to craft good things out of bad situations. As I was walking back to the main mission building from the Administration Building I came across a despondent looking guy sitting under a tree next to his car that was blocked up with obvious mechanical problems. I initiated a conversation and he told me that he was on his way back to California and his starter went out. He said he would be working day labor for a couple of days to get new parts. He also had an open wound that was very evident.

The real wound was on his heart. He shared with me about his marital and drug problems and how they messed his life up. I told him that I believed this was a divine appointment and that there was real help for him at Open Door Mission. After just letting him talk for about 20 minutes you could see that his appreciation for God’s guidance indeed began to be evident to him. I encouraged him to think about our New Life Recovery Program. I also suggested that he make an appointment with one of our counselors who are well equipped for family counseling. Who knows; maybe this bump in the road of life will lead to a highway of peace and joy for this dear brother.

Christmas in June

Christmas in June was today! This was a great opportunity for the near homeless in the community to come shop for much needed items. Families came on an invitation basis, and they were already lining up outside the Timberlake Outreach Center as early as 7:00 a.m., with doors opening at 10:00 a.m.!
Many wonderful volunteers came out to help families locate needed items that will supplement their income and prevent homelessness and poverty. Split into two shifts, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., these caring individuals, and groups gave up a big part of their saturday to help break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.
Over 4,100 families were invited to the event. Open Door Mission has seen a 46% increase in services at the Timberlake Outreach Center in 2009. Each family received clothing, housewares, furniture and some much needed pantry items that were provided by The Food Bank

There was live music provided by Glad Tidings, a cookout done by Open Door Mission's hospitality department. And the whole event was coordinated by volunteer Terry Brown, who started this with his wife Cindy, nine years ago.

We listen, give testimony and teach that the Triune God is real!

Watching CNN the other night, Angelina Jolie-Pitts cited there were 42 million homeless people worldwide. The short time I watched the program, she and the interviewer discussed being grateful for their wealth, as well as being able to share their wealth. They also talked about their privilege in life that allowed them to meet homeless children and families all over the world, many of whom have died from simple illness or from living in dire conditions. Mrs. Pitt shed tears at, I suspect, the enormity of what she has seen and how it feels like there is no do-able solution to eradicate homelessness worldwide.

I, too, have cried sometimes here at the Open Door Mission, with and over client’s situations that seem overwhelming and unfortunate. It happens to people from all walks of life. I thank God I don’t see the numbers of hurting people Mrs. Pitt does, but I see enough to break your heart many times over. Struggles of the imaginable and unimaginable; struggles of illiteracy; indifference toward the disabled and the ex-offender; neglect of children and abuse of vulnerable adults; perversions of ethics, morals and authority; and, the teachings of false doctrines, to name a few. A commonality I see in people I serve is their despondency in feeling they have lost their way in life. I believe this is why God sends them here!

We listen, give testimony and teach that the Triune God is real! We are called here to a ministry; some to preach, some to teach, some to plant seeds, and some to lead others to Christ! We do so because we believe in Revelations 21:4-5 "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.”

Quite frankly, we work the way we do because we do not want to see anyone not know Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, not know the 7,487 promises He makes, and not have the eternal life He promises to believers! Yes, we are challenged: challenged to ensure His word is shared to all! We are grateful to God for the numbers of people we are able to serve with free clothing, free housewares, free furniture, work preparedness programs, and one-on-one case management. But mostly, we are grateful that we can count on God’s promise that He does, and will provide!

When the Lord Calls; Are We Listening and Ready?

It was an average evening on the A,B and C wings of Lydia House. I went to work knowing I had some time to make up so I was prepared for a long night. We worked on deep cleaning most of the night and after everyone settled down for the night I planned to clean my office. I planned to go home around midnight but I was really tired so I was seriously considering leaving about 11:00 P.M.

That night was really interesting because as I was cleaning my office and 10:45 P.M. came around for some reason I knew I wasn’t supposed to leave even though I was extremely tired. I kept cleaning. Before I knew it the clock said 12:00. I started cleaning up the mess I made cleaning. At 12:15 A.M. security called and told me there were 2 policemen at the front desk wanting to know if we had room for a couple with a 6 week old baby girl! There had been an accident where a car drove into a bar/restaurant and created such an impact that the roof fell in on the apartments above.

I went to the front desk and took the policemen back to E-wing to check the status of the rooms and our bar list. There were no rooms in E-wing but there was one family room on the recovery side. As I was contemplating whether I should put them in that room I received a note that Tim Suelter, Open Door Mission's Men's Emergency Director, wanted me to call him immediately. I did that and he was on the phone with the fire department at the scene of the accident.

Between Tim and I we decided to put the couple in the room on C-wing. There were also 2 other male residents coming who would be staying in our men's wing. Tim notified the firemen and I told the policemen to have someone bring them down.

All of this took about 15 to 20 minutes to coordinate from start to finish. I felt so privileged to be available at a time when I normally wouldn’t be there, and I had goose bumps because I realized God’s plan for the evening. The policemen thanked me for having a room available and working with them. The firemen were so happy to know the family had a safe place to go. Tim and I marveled at God’s coordination of the situation and thanked him for the opportunity to be a part of it.

Only one of the men came to the mission that night and he was very well taken care of. I don’t know why the others didn’t come but it really doesn’t matter. What matters is God orchastrated it as an opportunity for someone to be ministered to, hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and Open Door Mission was chosen and ready for the chance to pull someone out of darkness, into the light.

This happens every time someone walks through the doors, or calls Open Door Mission on the phone. Everyone who calls with hope in their heart for a room for themselves or someone else in need is sent as a ministry opportunity. The police and firemen were so grateful to know there was a place of safety for that family that night, so God ministered to their hearts as well. I know this was a reminder to me how important it is for us to be mindful of the fact that I work for our Lord and not just the paycheck or the possibility of a raise or promotion. What really matters is... Who will the Lord find standing ready for service when He calls. I almost went home and now I am grateful for the leading of the Holy Spirit and the fact I obeyed, instead of missing out on the privilege of ministry.

Hi, my name is Amy Springer, and I am blessed to be able to say that I work at the Open Door Mission. More specifically, I get to work at the Timberlake Outreach Center where we serve the community, and I love my job!

I don’t know what you know about the Timberlake Outreach Center, but I would like to take this opportunity to give you a quick overview of the services we offer!

Kings Kloset: We take all of the donated clothing, household items, appliances, and furniture and GIVE it to families in need! How awesome is that? You can donate things that your family no longer uses or needs and bless other families with it. However, the physical things we give to people in need are only a small part of what we do here at the Timberlake Outreach Center.

For instance, did you know that we also offer Life Skill Classes? We have Life Skill Classes such as: GED, English as a Second Language, Common Sense Parenting, See Them Grow, Nutrition Class, Budgeting and some tutoring as well. People can come in and take these classes for free! If you, or someone you know, are in need of one of these classes, you can contact Judy Collins at 829-1540 or email at jcollins@opendoormission.org for information and class times!

Another class offered is Worknet. Worknet is a set of workshops to help men and women become more aware of the God given talents they naturally have and are already using. It is three weeks of Workshops, Interactive Labs, Mock Interviews and ends with a Celebration of Accomplishments. We also offer the 29/11 Program that is based on Jeremiah 29:11, which says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” This program has Strength Based Case Management, a 4 Phase Program plan to move clients from Survival to Long Term Growth, In-Depth Budgeting and Employment help, Spiritual Growth and Life Skill Classes. Have you "Got it"?

Hello everyone this is Angela Casper overnight supervisor for the Lydia House.
My nights are quiet here while everyone sleeps. The last three hours of my shift are not so quiet; everyone starts waking up and the bustle of getting ready for their day starts.
Most of my mornings with the clients are spent monitoring medication times and this is when clients love to share their progress with me. “I’ve found…. I’m applying for…” the most wonderful three words I love hearing is “I’ve got it”


I overheard these words the other day from a client, while I was entering my office. I was about to congratulate her when I found out that she had just found a house, she hadn’t gotten the house yet. She was talking as though she had already signed the lease. She believed that the Lord has already given her this house, what amazing faith she has.
Now those three words have new meaning for me, this client has the faith to believe that the Lord is going to give her a house, before she even receives it. I now know she will have a successful life, because she’s got it. She has the faith that moves mountains.

Last week, on the first really hot and humid day, my air conditioning stopped working. Believe me; I was really upset that my comfort had been taken away. I just didn’t know how I could stand the 90’s without cool dry air. Of course I soon had a repairman out and the air conditioning was up and cooling again. Then as I sat in my cool living room God reminded me that I was very lucky. Even when I didn’t have air conditioning I did have fans, an ice-maker and cool running water on tap-others in our community aren’t so blessed. Throughout the Omaha are there are families that have no air conditioning, much less fans to bring some relief from the heat. As you enjoy your air conditioner or fans this summer please think about those without. Please consider donating working window air conditioners and fans to Open Door Mission. Or better yet consider doing a “Beat the Heat” drive at your work, church or neighborhood. You can collect working window air conditioners & all types of fans, bottled water and sunscreen for Open Door Mission to provide for those in need this summer. Just your average week in Recovery

Hello to all from Men’s Recovery here at the Open Door Mission. We have just finished a great couple of weeks here in recovery and have been praising God for all of it. In the past couple of weeks we have seen men get their GED’s, Driver’s licenses, employment, find housing, move out of state to trade schools, and move out of state to learn skilled trades. Wow! In a couple more weeks, we will see two more of our men graduate from our very own WorkNet program here at ODM.

Just last week I went to see one of our men be presented with his GED. They had prepared a special ceremony for him and invited his family. We all shared chicken, cake, and other treats, but the neatest part was watching his family interaction. His daughter, granddaughter and sister had shown up to celebrate. It was inspiring to see the sense of pride his daughter had in her father who, after all these years, hit a major milestone in his life, setting an example for them to follow. It was very moving watching them embrace through all the tears and seeing how much it meant to all of them. But, the most encouraging part for me personally, was listening to what his sister said when she hugged him. She said, “Remember what I did when I got my GED!” I learned that she went on to get her Masters Degree in Child Psychology. I thought, wow, what a neat thing. You see, this man is also an extremely intelligent man and capable of doing the same. Maybe the Open Door Mission has just helped society gain another Child Psychologist. You never know!

The experience shows a couple of things that we are well aware of. One is that anyone, no matter how intelligent, can get caught up in life altering addictions. Intelligence just isn’t enough by itself to get us by in life or to keep us from tremendous, life-changing stumbling blocks. We genuinely need a life-transforming faith, something bigger than ourselves. Christ had done what no education or intellect can do. Transform a human life. The GED hadn’t really changed anything; it was change that made it possible to get the GED. It was just an evidence of that change that had already occurred. Secondly, we are never fully aware of the potential that our men and women possess or the power of God to fulfill that potential.

I could go on with other stories, but I realize how long that would make my blog, so I’ll end with just this one selection for now. What started out to be just another day and another ceremony turned into an unforgettable experience. But that is in many ways an average day in here in Recovery.

Coming from Behind

I am not a sports writer. To be honest, I’m not really much of a sports fan. I like to watch the championship games of basically any sport, and I watch football on Sunday afternoons, but am often distracted from the game by the general flow of life in a household with 3 children ages 6 and down.

Bearing that in mind, I’m going to offer some commentary on the photo you see here. What do you see in this picture? If you are a college baseball fan, you will know this is Brett Eibner, of the Arkansas Razorbacks, celebrating with his teammates last night. What does he have to celebrate? Well, they had been trailing by 2 runs in their elimination game of the NCAA Men’s College World Series. There were 2 outs in the top of the ninth inning, and Arkansas was on the brink of being sent home, their dreams of a championship shattered. Brett stepped up to the plate. The commentators, Orel Hershiser included, declared that Brett was one of the few hitters on the Arkansas roster with “real homerun hitting power.” Sure enough, Brett blasted a homerun so deep into left center, it almost left the park. Driving in 2 RBI’s, he tied the game, and eventually, Arkansas won the game 4-3 in extra innings.

So what does all this have to do with the Open Door Mission? Here at Open Door Mission, we are in the business of “come from behind” victories! The picture below is from our most recent class of graduates from the New Life Recovery and Journey to Work programs. Take a look at the faces of these graduates. See anything similar to the expression of Brett Eibner above? Each of these graduates had been in much worse situations than 2 outs, trailing by two in the 9th inning of the College World Series! Drug addiction, abuse, and hopelessness had driven each of them to the streets, and eventually to the Open Door Mission. Looking at the depths to which they had fallen, no one would have thought they had a chance of recovery, let alone victory, in life. By the grace of God, and the support of the wonderful case managers and donors of Open Door Mission, they are celebrating a new HOPE!

Perhaps that is why I was so glued to the television last night, staying up way past my normal bedtime. I simply had to see the outcome of this game, much in the way I am drawn to work here at Open Door Mission. I love “come from behind” victories, and I get to witness several each year, at the graduation ceremonies of Open Door Mission, and occasionally on TV watching sports.

"God used the day "

In our Lydia House programs we strive to assist client growth in the spiritual, emotional, physical, academic and life skills areas. As part of teaching life skills in the New Life Recovery Program we look for creative opportunities to show clients how to have sober fun. One day this month a couple of volunteer teachers canceled their classes due to summer vacations and the clients had a few open hours on their schedule, so Lydia House staff decided a Luau picnic would be something many of them might not have ever done sober. Praise God we had numerous donated items we could use for Luau theme decorations. However, we only told the clients we were going on an Adventure Trip!

That morning I watched the weather forecast and they predicted a top 100 day in the metro, a dry 75 degrees, Hallelujah! Another staff member, Alicia and I filled the ice chest, prepared the food, gathered kites, packed bubbles and outdoor games. We loaded the van and off we went. The van was filled with laughter as some of the ladies who were anxious and curious asked numerous questions about what adventure we were taking them on. Another part of life skills is learning to have trusting healthy relationships so as staff we knew most of them were being stretched to believe in us and trust us without knowing all the details of our plans.

As we got closer to our destination, I announced that we were having a Luau picnic at Lake Manawa! We arrived, unloaded the van, decorated the tables and sat down to eat. We offered thanks to God for the food and fellowship as gusts of cold wind came across the lake and heavy dark clouds began forming. Nevertheless, we bundled up close together and enjoyed our lunch. After lunch we learned together how to assemble and get the kites aloft. It turned out to be a top 100 kite flying day! Some people played catch and others blew bubbles. Even when the cold sprinkles of rain started the ladies were determined that nothing was going to interrupt their blessing so we continued playing until it started pouring!

We laughed together as we packed up in the rain. We ran to the van and on the way back to the Open Door Mission we were rejoicing that God had given us a fun memory together! One of the best parts for me was when I got to overhear the ladies conversations later in the day as they were still expressing gratitude. Even though our Luau picnic was rained on God used the day to bless us with His Joy!

A Man with a Mission

Sean Rhodes is a man with a mission to help others. Sean works at USCIS-Department of Homeland Security, our neighbor down the road. Last year he contacted Open Door Mission to do a “Winter Gear” drive and a food drive. Both were a success, but Sean decided to do more. He maintains a “year round” collection box for various needs at Open Door Mission. Today he brought in 85 pounds of food, 40 pounds of clothing and 24 pounds of shoes. Sean shared that on weekends he goes around to neighborhood garage sales and lets them know if they don’t know what to do with their leftover items he will gladly pick them for Open Door Mission. What a great idea, what a great mission to help others-thanks Sean.

So what are you going to do with your “leftover” garage sale items? Consider donating gently used “leftover” clothing, furniture, housewares, toys and working appliances (big & small) to Open Door Mission’s Timberlake Outreach Center. There they will have a good second life helping others in our community. Remember what you don’t need any longer may be just what someone else does need.

A Fine, Fun, Family Fair

Last night was a great evening at the Washington Library Annual Family Fair. This event brings the local neighborhood together for an evening of rides, live music, Bounce Houses, Fun Slides, clowns, face painting, balloon creations, puppet shows and don’t forget the Sno-cones, cotton candy and popcorn. Various community outreach programs were there with information and to encourage participation in volunteer activities and highlighting community programs.

The event was lots of fun with “kids” of all ages enjoying the event. John Bernardi, manager of the Washington Library has been doing this event for several years-and it is definitely a fun time for all. Everyone I talked to said they look forward to the fair-a great family event.

I shared many Timberlake Outreach Center flyers with the adults (and the library staff). The kids enjoyed the "Jesus Loves You" bracelets I handed out, even the boys! It was a good time to connect with families and share our needs as well as ways Open Door Mission could help if needed. Several people took flyers for “friends” who needed help. I gave out lots of Hobart stories and Phone-a-story slips (The library staff was thrilled we do phone-a-story). Several people commented that they had volunteered at Open Door Mission through their church. There was even a Day Camp staff member at the fair!

A big thank you to the group from Christ Community that are spending their day volunteering at Open Door Mission’s Bible Day Camp. They are playing games, helping with crafts and just ministering to the many children that are attending camp. They are averaging over 100 children each day.

Lori and Ashley spent part of their valuable day volunteering at Timberlake Outreach Center. They helped sort clothes, organize and stock the shelves so low income families and individuals can come and supplement their income and prevent homelessness.

Heather and her group from Pay Pal are here tonight volunteering their time in the kitchen. They are helping prepare and serve the hot nutritious meal this evening to many hungry and homeless men, women, and children.

To Dream Again

Hi my name is Judy Collins and one of the many things I love about my job is working with our 29/11 clients in the community. I love it because through time we see hope restored in our clients and they start to plan and dream about the possibility of their future. For those of you who don’t know about this program it is a Christ-based program that sets and adheres to strong budgeting goals, debt reduction, saving for an emergency fund and planning for future needs. Along with setting vocational and educational goals for present and future employment, attending pertinent life skills classes that will help our client’s present situation and help them set goals to improve their future.

When our clients become part of the 29/11 program they are in a survival mode, living from pay check to pay check, behind on current bills and many are fearful they might be homeless within the next month or two if they don’t get some help. I asked Amanda one of our clients if she would share a little of her story with you and here is what she wrote:

“When I came to the Open Door Mission, I was broken. I was coming out of an abusive relationship and I had 6 children. The home that I lived in wasn't suitable for my children. I wasn't able to pay my bills. I would live wondering if I would have gas or electricity from month to month. After joining the 29/11 program I have learned how to budget my money, I have learned better parenting skills, and I have come closer in my relationship with God. I no longer worry about having my lights or gas shut off. I haven't for the last 10 months or so. I moved into a home that is an improvement from where I was living. My children are happier, they no longer feel the stress radiate off of me. And what I feel to be the best long term improvement in becoming self sufficient, I have gone back to school to get an associates degree. The Open Door Mission has been a blessing from God for my family. I will forever be grateful for all the guidance, services and classes that have been offered to me.”

Thank you for partnering with us to help change lives one family at a time. Through God’s love and life changing power and your support through gifts and donations we are able to help families like Amanda’s, to have a better life in their present situation and hope for the future. And with that new found hope they are able to dream again.

So Much More than Hospitality

Hi I am Amy Buss Open Door Mission’s Human Resources Director.

Today I want to tell you about a group of employees who may be behind the scenes at Open Door Mission; however without them we could not provide hot nutritious meals.

At the Open Door Mission we believe that hope begins with a meal. Can you imagine serving three meals a day 365 days a year and never knowing how many people will show up on any given day? That’s what our hospitality team faces everyday. They serve about 1,500 meals a day.

We have an outstanding hospitality team lead by Claudzell Meeks. His faithful co-laborers are David Duncan, Ramon Bermudez, and Nicholas Paucnti. They start their day at 5:00 am getting breakfast ready and end the day at 8:00 pm making sure the clients have a snack before bed. It’s not an easy job but they love doing it. You never know what they will be making on any given day, but know this: it is made with love and it will be yummy.

What a great day yesterday-four ladies from Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn Iowa came to drop off more donations and take a tour of Open Door Mission. Elk Horn Lutheran is a faithful supporter of Open Door Mission-they have had “Undie Sunday”, collected Bibles (including Spanish Bibles) and other Christian books and are now collecting linens to help provide sheets, towels and blankets. These ladies spent time talking with staff and asking questions as we toured most of Open Door Mission. They were amazed at all the programs and help that Open Door Mission offered to the homeless and near homeless in the community.

When we were in the car at the end of the tour these women looked at each and said…”well there is a lot that is needed, we need to get busy.” What a wonderful caring attitude-not "look what we have helped do", but "we need to not only keep on doing, but do more!" Giving from the Heart

As the Senior Development Officer at the Open Door Mission I have the honor and pleasure of meeting with many of the special people that support our work of changing lives. Their support comes in the form of prayer, volunteering their time and talent on site, and sharing their financial gifts. Here are a few of the stories that I have heard regarding the reasons that our donors give.

-Curt noted that “part of my tithing has always supported missions and the Open Door Mission is a great mission to support.”

-Bill shares that “I am excited about how the Open Door Mission turns lives around through Christ.”

-Tim said, “My business did especially well one month and I wanted to help an organization that helps others so I sent a check to the Open Door Mission.”

-Brad and Laura fully support their local church’s new building project but knew their church’s mission giving decreased during the building phase. Therefore, as a couple, they decided to increase their personal support of the Open Door Mission.

-Susan shares, “our daughter was abused and murdered in another state. We decided to send the memorials gift in her memory to the Lydia House to help other women in desperate situations because know we know that God saves lives at the Open Door Mission.”

These are just a few of the heart moving stories I have heard on my visits with Open Door Mission donors. You can see why it is an honor to work with the donors of the Open Door Mission in the manner I do. I not only have the opportunity to share the great news happening at the Mission but I am privileged to hear the stories of our donors and how God has moved their hearts to give. Thanks for joining the Open Door Mission with your ongoing prayers and gifts as we work to change lives.

"Work Made Fun Get's Done"

Hi folks! Thanks for reading my blog today. My name is Dan Applegate. I am the Director of Community Services here at the Mission. I’d like to share my Saturday with you. Last Saturday at the Mission was Brookside Church “Project Serve” day at the Mission. We had upwards of a hundred committed volunteers here at the Mission with the sole purpose of serving. That they did!The Timberlake Outreach Center building got nothing short of an extreme make over. After working a forty hour week, Brookside Church members spent an eight hour day at the Mission painting, cleaning carpets and many other tasks. It was a wonderful blessing. The things they accomplished were maintenance items that we would never have had time to do.It’s a powerful thing when God’s people get together and pool their talents. What an amazing experience and I am thankful to be a part of it. Thanks to all you folks who helped make this happen. I so much appreciate you and enjoyed working side by side with you! To God be The Glory!

What God is Doing at Lydia House

Greeting from the Lydia House,

We have so much going on here at the Lydia House this summer! On June 1st we began our 7th Year of Bible Day Camp, on the first day we had 100 children attend. The kids behaved so well (we were scared) and really got into our theme this year which is “The Ten Commandments”. We have all new songs and bible studies and crafts centered on this theme for the next 10 weeks of camp to really instill it in the kid’s everyday lives. We have been blessed with an amazing bible day camp staff this year headed by our own Pastor Tyrome , who in upcoming days will give you more of a view of Bible Day Camp on this blog.

The new building for the Lydia House is also coming up fast. I watch it everyday and am amazed at what the workers can accomplish. My husband recently came down to see it and walk around the building and hear an update of what is going on for the Rebuilding Lives Campaign. Steve was amazed at how many changes were going on and happening and he lives with me. He said he listens to me talk all the time about the building and changes but to see it really made him excited about the changes the Mission is making. So if my husband can be inspired I know you can to. I invite you to call the mission and schedule a tour to see what is happening now and in the upcoming future.

A Little Help from Friends

Saturday, June 6th, some of the men in the New Life Recovery and Journey to Work programs escorted graduate Chris Christensen down to Springfield, MO, where he will be attending Victory Trade School's Culinary Arts program. Stan Latta, Open Door Mission's Men's Recovery Services Director said it was a good, long day (16 hours), but the men enjoyed helping Chris get settled into this new chapter of his life.

Open Door Mission looks forward to Chris getting his training, and possibly coming back to cook for us some day!

Open Door Mission would like to thank all the volunteers that spent part of their valuable Saturday volunteering at the Open Door Mission. Friends of the Friendless

Today, I attended Open Door Mission's monthly Friends of the Friendless meeting and luncheon. With approx. 28 in attendance, we enjoyed a meal of Chicken Marsala, roasted potato skins and cherry tomatoes, California Mix veggies and salad. There were several types of breads, cookies, and beverages to finish out the menu. In Pres. Wanda’s absence, Judy Ward, VP, presided over the proceedings, leading us in devotion and prayer. Ken Davis, graduate, and Rachel Quiroz, current member of the program, gave stirring testimony of how God has worked wonders in their lives. They both emphasized how the Lord uses the Open Door Mission, and it’s awesome programs, to heal wounds, begin vital recovery and get people back on the right path in their lives. Judy presented the list of events and volunteer opportunities for June, as well as a list of prayer requests. It was announced that FOF will have a new Treasurer and tribute was paid to the long and faithful service of the outgoing officer, Virginia Fletcher. After the meeting adjourned, the members began work on their service project for today which was to prepare a large mailing for upcoming food drives that will be going out soon. As usual, there was good fellowship and people got to connect with friends and talk about ways to serve God by serving the Mission!

• Today was the first day of Open Door Mission’s Bible Day Camp. Many needy children are able to experience lots of fun, food and fellowship over the next 10 weeks because of the many donor’s who sponsored a child for only $49 dollars. Thank you

• Dr. Jerry Fischer spent part of his busy day volunteering his valuable time and talents. He comes faithfully each Monday and has a medical clinic. This allows many guests to get the medical care they need.

• Officer Banks and his group of youth are spending part of their evening volunteering in the kitchen. They are helping prepare and serve the hot nutritious meal to the many hungry and homeless men, women, and children.

King Solomon's Dilema

I just got back from doing devotions with the recovery program clients and we talked about King Solomon during the devotional time. That is really sticking to my mind and I can’t help but include some of that in my blog today. I hope that it sticks with our program members as well as it is with me! It is indeed strange that the wisest man to have ever lived (excluding of course, our Lord) would turn to serve foreign idols (which he knew were just plain inanimate objects) at the end of his life. Well, that’s what we discussed, Why did he do that?

You know, there is a deep lesson there for recovery clients and for the rest of us as well. We certainly do our best to instill as much wisdom as we can into each client, but what if they take the focus of their faith off Christ and place it in their own wisdom? They certainly learn a lot of facts about Christ, recovery skills, life skills, etc., while they are with us. However, there is a subtle danger in trusting that knowledge in and of itself, of thinking that they have learned enough to keep them safe for life. It is just that simple to loose focus on commitment. Even Solomon seemed to fall victim to this ploy.

The danger for me and the staff is to over-emphasize those facts and how to use them, while under-emphasizing the necessity of staying focused on relentless commitment. You know, recovery is hard work and one has to have tremendous respect for our men and women with enough courage to attempt it. We are all going to fall down several times daily, but how often are we willing to get back up and go again? That’s what it takes, relentless commitment. We definitely want our clients to understand the importance of growing in wisdom and yet understanding that it is not a substitute for good old fashioned commitment. (Hey, maybe there is something to be said for us stubborn people after all)

So, I sit here thinking of ways that the staff and I can help our clients stay focused and gain an increasing sense of commitment. The haunting thing is that it keeps coming back to me that nothing is better than role-modeling. I wish I could just do the teaching and they would get it, but it always comes back to role-modeling. I am so thankful to be working around others who are so willing to provide just that.

Well, as you can tell, devotions aren’t just another slot to fill time here. They are to bring us to a deeper level of our own devotion to God. I am very proud to say that that is our focus here at ODM.
