Transforming Culture...Part 1

Are we just biding our time, or are we building where we are?  In our culture, so many people just go through the motions, passively waiting for things to happen in their lives.  We have a choice, though:  we can choose to live always waiting and looking to the future, or we can live in the present, ready to build where God has planted us.  The following snippet is from “Pioneering to Prospering,” a sermon at Passion City Church:

“We don’t want to just be pioneers who bide our time, but we want to be pioneers who establish ourselves so new life can exist.  Pioneer (definition) a person who is among the first to research and develop a new area of knowledge or activity.  A pioneer recognizes that you build where you are.  God sends Jeremiah so they remember this.  He has brought us to this place for purpose.”

And below is a verse that perfectly ties into this thought:

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon:  “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.  Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.  Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have.  They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,” declares the Lord.  —Jeremiah 29:4-9

The thought in today’s world is that we can either accept the current culture or we can reject it.  I think God is calling us not to accept or reject, but to transform the culture that we’ve been called into.  He’s called us to be change agents, to be a people who set the tone for culture.  So if something is unjust or un-right, we don’t settle for that fact, but we work to change the culture from the inside out.  We make followers of Jesus!
