There’s a nice flat area between the Garland Thompson Men’s Center and the Lydia House, so we set up a court there. This location worked much better than the Rebuilding Lives Center courtyard where the last tournament was held. Being outside, we were able to have many more participants and spectators enjoy the wonderful competition.
An Open Door Mission volunteer was able to get a basketball hoop donated so we could run a full court, double elimination tournament. This enhanced the tournament as you wouldn't be out at just one loss. We had three referees, a volunteer, a staff member, and a resident, which kept things fair.
The competition was spicy, and the staff team was unable to defend their title. The team that ended up winning was actually a group of non-typical looking ballers—two older men and a guy wearing boots! It was truly good to see the friendly competition and fun being had by all!
